Logbook hours, explained

NSW logbook FAQ

See our full driving test preparation guide →

How many logbook hours do I actually need?

If you're under 25, NSW requires 120 hours of supervised driving, including at least 20 hours of night driving, before you're eligible to sit your driving test. You'll also need to have held your learner licence for at least 12 months.

Do lessons with an instructor count for more?

Yes — under the NSW 3-for-1 scheme, each hour with a licensed instructor counts as 3 logbook hours, up to a maximum of 10 lessons (30 logged hours). It's the fastest legal way to build your hours.

What if I'm 25 or older?

You're exempt from the 120-hour logbook requirement. That said, supervised practice is still strongly recommended before your test — the roads don't get easier just because the rule doesn't apply.

Can lessons help me finish faster?

Yes. Between the 3-for-1 bonus and structured lessons that target exactly what you're weak on, most learners close their logbook out faster with a mix of instructor time and independent practice than with independent practice alone.

Will learning in an automatic limit my licence?

If you test in an automatic, your provisional licence gets an "automatic only" condition until you either pass a manual test or move onto your unrestricted licence. It's completely normal — the vast majority of learners do this and it doesn't slow down getting your P1.

It's more manageable than it sounds

Let's do the math

=
10hours a month

That's roughly two short drives after school plus one longer weekend drive, every week. That's it.

Our motto

What "Skills for Life" actually means

Passing the test is the milestone. Driving safely for the next 50 years is the actual goal — so every lesson is built around habits that outlast your P-plates, not just what gets you through on the day.

Safe habits, not just test habits

The difference between driving to pass and driving to last a lifetime.

Confidence in real traffic

Not just quiet streets — the roads you'll actually be driving on for years.

Calm decision-making

Staying level-headed under pressure — the skill that actually prevents accidents.

Skills that carry past P-plates

What you learn here doesn't expire when the plates come off.
